Electro-fenton and electropersulfate for the treatment of water containing tenofovir

Currently I give some courses and tutorials in order to transmit my passion for chemistry.

Beautiful, young and dynamic. These are the features that emerge when approaching the portrait of Dr. MOTUE WAFFO . Originally from Southern Cameroon, she arrived at the University of Ngaoundéré in 2012 to continue her studies in chemistry after obtaining her baccalaureate C.

In august 2023 she brilliantly defends her doctoral thesis PhD in inorganic chemistry option analytical chemistry on a theme which concerns the treatment of tenofovir, a molecule used in the treatment of people living with HIV by electrochemical processes. Electrochemical processes, namely electro-fenton and electropersulfate, are processes based on the generation of hydroxide and sulfate radicals. They are commonly called green chemistry because it does not require the addition of other reagents.

She therefore applied these processes for the treatment of wastewater containing tenofovir. This molecule is non-biodegradable and is likely to infiltrate plants and drinking water, thus leading to a phenomenon of bioaccumulation and resistance. It is therefore a current theme which aims to raise awareness among the population and the authorities on the use of certain molecules in order to implement a plan to combat environmental pollution.

Among the difficulties encountered in carrying out this great research project is a lack of equipment in research laboratories at the national level.

To remedy these difficulties she had to look for collaborators in countries which have slightly more sophisticated means. This is how she was accepted in a laboratory in Morocco for her research work. Of course this was at her expense.

Also as a female scientist, the challenges in this very masculine field are enormous such as the lack of consideration. Reason why Dr MOTUE advises young women to be passionate, especially disciplined and to arm themselves with strength, especially on a mental level and with courage. She advises also women to not be influenced by opinions and external forces.
